ABOUT POWER-GEN AFRICA CONFERENCE & EXHIBITION

POWER-GEN Africa and its sister event DistribuTECH Africa will return to Cape Town, Republic of South Africa, on 15-17 July 2015 and will once again provide comprehensive coverage of the power needs, resources, and issues facing the electricity generation industries across
sub-Saharan Africa.

Africa’s power requirements continue to expand with the rapid growth and development through out the continent driving the need for more widespread, reliable and sustainable electricity. With POWER-GEN Africa’s conference and exhibition focusing on all aspects of the conventional and renewable power generation industry and DistribuTECH Africa focusing on transmission and distribution sectors within sub-Saharan Africa, the event brings together the world’s leading power equipment suppliers along with those developing power infrastructure in this dynamic region of the world.

   

POWER-GEN Africa and DistribuTECH Africa targets those who work in the utility and private power sectors, engineering and commercial personnel from the equipment manufacturing and consulting fields. The event will address professionals from utilities and energy intensive industries with responsibility for ensuring power supply, and officials and ministers from the national and regional political spheres who are tasked with energy policy.

The three day event will feature a multi-track conference and an extensive exhibition, having had more than 100 exhibitors at the 2014 event, with the world’s leading suppliers from both the international and African power sectors demonstrating their latest technologies once again.

POWER-GEN AFRICA & DISTRIBUTECH AFRICA 2014 HIGHLIGHTS

POWER-GEN Africa and DistribuTECH Africa 2014 began on Monday 17 March 2014 and over 3 days we welcomed over 2,300 people in attendance from 69 countries worldwide.

The Opening Keynote Session was attended by over 350 delegates, with standing room only, hosted by Mr. Nigel Blackaby, Director of PennWell Conferences, PennWell Corporation and included presentations from Mr. Daniel B. Poneman, Deputy Secretary of Energy, US Department of Energy, USA; Dr. Wolsey Barnard, Deputy Director General: Policy, Planning and Clean Energy Department of Energy, Republic of South Africa; Mr. Robert Kahimise, Chief Executive Officer of Erongo RED, Namibia; and Dr. Steve J. Lennon, Group Executive, Sustainability, Eskom Group Holdings, Republic of South Africa



At the conclusion of the Opening Keynote session the Keynote Speakers made their way to the POWER-GEN Africa and DistribuTECH Africa Exhibition Floor and officially opened the event with a Ribbon Cutting and Tour of Exhibitors at the Exhibition.

The Exhibition itself hosted a range of local and international companies of high stature, including exhibits from Andritz Hydro, Ansaldo Energia, FATA, ABB, Doosan Power Systems, Eaton South Africa, Foster Wheeler, SPX, and Eskom, to name but a few.  

After the official opening the Conference continued with the Joint Plenary Panel Discussion, based upon the topic of "Energy Security on Africa".

This was followed by Conference Sessions on Emissions Control, Renewable Energy Policy & Finance, Project Case Studies, Country Spotlights, Gas Turbines and Combined Cycle, A Wind Powered Africa, a Panel Discussion on South Africa Power Pool, Capacity Building, Training & Development, Harnessing Africa's Hydropower Potential, Operation & Maintenance & Plant Improvements, Generators & Steam Turbines, Electrical & Auxiliary, Boiler & Technology Issues, Policy & Regulations, and Africa's Solar Future.

Over the 3 days, the Exhibition Floor continued to be open enabling the opportunity to meet previous contacts, make new business contacts, network and create new business opportunities.

The Conference included many significant and interesting topics with a host of high-quality international and local speakers covering the 5 concurrent tracks that make up the POWER-GEN Africa and DistribuTECH Africa Conference Programme.

In addition to this, on Wednesday 19 March 2014, the 5 tracks continued, and the event closed with a Closing Reception and Best Papers Awards Ceremony. With a leading line up of international industry speakers, delivering presentations covering three POWER-GEN Africa tracks, Strategic, Technical and Renewables, and two DistribuTECH Africa tracks during the 3 day conference in Cape Town, this was one event you just could not miss.

Power infrastructure, billing models, ‘need review’ 
Amid ongoing challenges in SA power delivery, key players in the sector say the time has come for reviews of the infrastructure management and revenue models. This emerged at a round table brainstorming session held in Sandton in November 2013, where stakeholders debated the challenges and opportunities in the power generation and distribution sectors, ahead of the POWER-GEN Africa and DistribuTECH Africa 2014 conferences and exhibition, to be staged in Cape Town in March next year.
